Hispanic Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month / Mes de la Hispanidad

Last night, we had a guest speaker for storytime. It was my best, best, best, best friend, Violet. She's from El Salvador. She speaks Spanish. She read stories for the kids in English and Spanish. She also taught them a couple of common phrases like "hola", "como estas?", "muy bien", "buenos dias", "adios" and "hasta luego". She taught them the "Itsy Bitsy Spider"in Spanish. Then, we finished off the evening with a pinata.

She read the first three books because they were short and the rest were books used for display:
  • I Am Latino: the beauty in me by Sandra L. Pinkney
  • Fiesta Babies by Carmen Tafolla
  • Spicy Hot Colors = Colores Picantes by Sherry Shahan
  • I Love Saturday y Domingos by Alma Flor Ada
  • Bebe Goes Shopping bySusan Middleton Elya
  • Oh No Gotta Go by Susan Middleton Elya
  • Cuckoo : Mexican folktale = Cucu : un cuento folklorico mexicano by Lois Ehlert (totally love the ills.)
  • Just a Minute: a trickster tale and counting book by Yuyi Morales
  • Little Night by Yuyi Morales
  • Chatos Kitchen by Gary Soto
  • Abuelos by Pat Mora
Activities:
Pinata - Totally cool! We didn't do the blind-fold and smash it with a bat or stick. These days the pinatas come with strings which the kids can take turns pulling until one releases the candy. Its so much safer inside this way especially with small children.
