Dr. Seuss Birthday Party

Instead of story hour we had a party to celebrate Dr. Seuss' 106 birthday as well as promote the Read Across American initative. The party festivities were cool. I had a wonderful turn out [23 children] which I thought was pretty good for a first time event. I didn't get to do all the things I originally planned on doing because I thought it would be a small crowd, maybe 10 to 12 kids.

Instead I got more than I could chew. JoJo's mom did a wonderful job in designing the cake. Thanks to Margie and Michael for the uncoordinated but low budget decorations. Overall I had a blast. I think the kids enjoyed it too. However I would not read "Green Eggs and Ham" because it was too long. Maybe "One Fish, Two Fish" or "The Foot Book".

Things I would do differently next year...
  1. Have a volunteer dress up as "The Cat in the Hat" [order costume at Target.com or online party stores] to read the book.
  2. Reserve the meeting room
  3. Extend the time 7-8 pm
  4. Order Dr. Seuss items at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance from http://www.seussland.com/
  5. Decorate the day before the event
  6. Ask for at least 2 volunteers or parent assistance
  7. Buy paper products from the Dollar Store and food products from Walmart-CHEAPER
