Gingerbread Storytime

We made gingerbread houses for storytime. I brought a pre-baked kit from AC Moore that includes the roof and side panels for the house, candy, icing and icing bag for the older kids. I used the 3-D Gingerbread House Craft Kits for the small kids. It was fun and messy.

I read Gingerbread Boy by Paul Galdone.

Hilarious, totally funny! Holy fuzzbutt! Binky the Space Cat is back and meets his match when his owner brings home a new cat. This is part of the Binky Adventure series.

Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock: Tails and Tales

I went crazy when I saw this because I grew up watching Fraggle Rock. This was a totally classic moment. This new volume in the continuing collection of brand-new, all original Fraggle Rock comic book stories featuring Gobo, Mokey, Wembley, Booker and Red with brand new adventures.

Kids Read contender: Otis and the Tornado by Loren Long

Otis is back! Otis and all his farm friends are enjoying a summer's day, but the bull has no interest in playing and stays in his pen. Suddenly the day turns frightening and stormy: it's a tornado! Otis takes all of the animals to safety, but the bull is still locked in his pen! Quick as his tires will take him, Otis putt puff puttedy chuffs back to the farm to save the day.

I like the first book, Otis. I don't recall sharing it with the kids so I may share it with the older readers.

Kids Read contender: Bone Dog by Eric Rohmann

Although devastated when his pet dog dies, a young boy goes trick-or-treating and receives a timely visit from an old friend during a scary encounter with graveyard skeletons. I thought it was going to be cute and sweet, instead chiller with the skeletons and Ella coming back as a skeleton dog from the dead. Maybe a Halloween contender?

Storytime contender: Ten Little Catrerpillars by Bill Martin Jr.

Illustrations and rhyming text follow ten caterpillars as one wriggles up a flower stem, another sails across a garden pool, and one reaches an apple leaf, where something amazing happens.

theme : caterpillars, counting, flowers

Activity: Whose Here Today?

Have the kids stand in a circle. Do a quick demostation so they know what to do. Clap to the beat of "Farmer and the Dell" song as you sing it.

(child's name) is here today. (child's name) is here today. Turn around, sit down. (child's name) is here today!

Repeat for each child in the circle. Good starter/ice breaker activity.
